Research findings from the Challenges of Decision-Making in the Digital Age (CoDiDA)
research project were presented at the 37th Central European Conference on Information and
Intelligent Systems (CECIIS 2026)
, held in Varaždin from 16 to 18 September 2026 and
organized by the Faculty of Organization and Informatics, University of Zagreb. This year’s
central conference theme was “The Next Wave of Intelligent Systems,” with a particular focus
on the development and application of intelligent systems, generative artificial intelligence,
and the changes that emerging technologies are bringing to organizations and society.

The following paper by Katarina Kostelić, Cristina Fleșeriu, and Vlad Bocăneț was presented
in the Intelligent Systems section:
From Artificial Intelligence as Automation to Generative AI as a Work Tool: A Text
Network Analysis of Public Discourse Before and After ChatGPT

The study examines how public discourse on artificial intelligence and work has changed
since the emergence of ChatGPT. Using text network analysis of 200 articles published on

The Conversation, the study compares themes and relationships between concepts before and
after the public launch of ChatGPT.

The Conversation publishes research-based articles written by academics and experts for a
broader audience, thereby influencing which scientific insights enter wider public discourse as
well as how expectations, concerns, and perceptions surrounding emerging technologies are
shaped.

The findings indicate a shift from earlier discussions focused primarily on automation, jobs,
and the potential replacement of human labour towards a more diverse understanding of
generative AI as a practical tool for work and learning. More recent AI discourse has become
increasingly diversified, linking AI to education, writing and research, productivity, business
processes, organizational technology adoption, copyright, and AI governance.
The analysis also shows that public discourse is neither uniformly optimistic nor negative.
Rather, perceptions of artificial intelligence vary depending on the domain and the way in
which AI is applied.
