Sažetak:
La hermandad de las malas hijas (The Sisterhood of Bad Daughters), a novel by the Spanish author Vanessa Montfort published between 2024 and 2025, brings together intertwined stories of mothers and daughters and of lives shaped through relationships of care, expectation and affective attachment. Moving between voices and situations, the novel is especially concerned with daughterehood: it raises questions about what it means to ‘become a daughter’, to be named a ‘good’ or ‘good enough daughter’, or to inhabit the role of ‘daughter’ marked by obligation and emotional responsibility. Rather than offering explanations or resolutions, the narrative returns to these relationships and rewrites thm without the demand for coherence, continuity or closure. Read in dialogue with Judith Butler’s reflections on subject formation and ethical responsibility, the novel can be understood as opening up a space for what Butler calls an ‘ethics without judgement’. Subjectivity does not appear as autonomous or morally settled, but as relational and exposed, formed through modes of address and normative demands that cannot be fully chosen or mastered. By approaching daughterhood as a relational position rather than a stable or exclusively gendered identity, the novel resists assigning blame or working towards reconciliation. Instead, by remaining with the ambivalence of the mother–daughter bond, it produces an effect that asks the reader not to judge, but to stay with the fragility of care.
